Content Filtering
What is a content filter?
This prevents the computer user from viewing Web sites that contain unwanted content, such as pornography, hate speech and sites that promote violence or permit gambling.
Why might you need this?
While Web sites containing inappropriate material comprise a tiny fraction of all the Web sites on the Internet, even when they don't intend to, many children run into obscenity, gambling and malicious Web sites on the Internet. Consider these statistics:
- 70 percent of all 15-17 year-olds who have ever gone online have accidentally stumbled across obscenity online, 23 percent "very" or "somewhat" often. (Kaiser Family Foundation study, 2001)
- One in five children ages 10-17 have received a sexual solicitation over the Internet. (The Web's Dark Secret; Newsweek, 19 March, 2001)
- 43 percent of children said they do not have rules about Internet use in their homes. (Time/CNN Poll, 2000)
- 17 percent of parents believe their children are posting online profiles, as compared to 45 percent of children who report doing this. (Internet Safety for Kids; Protocol Analysis Institute)
What makes matters worse; the kinds of material available today on the Internet are nothing like Playboy magazine. The message and images can be far more explicit and much of it promotes a connection between violence and sex.
Compulsive gambling among teenagers is a growing problem, and many of them are learning to gamble online. Web filtering software can keep them from getting started.
How can I add content protection?
We recognize that not all households have the same need in regards to content filtering. Since there is no one-size-fits-all, it is necessary to make the filtering specific to individual computers. In order to accomplish this, a small software installation is necessary to activate the control on the computer, which is password protected to prevent deactivation or removal (unless the correct password is supplied). It doesn't matter what Web browser is used.
